Executive coaching is a one-on-one learning and development process between a coach (the service provider) and a business executive (the client).  The coach who is assigned to the client provides support and guidance that is beneficial to the client or the organisation that he works for.  The aim is to increase the client’s managerial and leadership skills and performance, and to discuss the resolution of business problems and the methods adopted to that end.

Executive coaching is a powerful management tool that is available to business leaders.  This frequently-used method of coaching aspires to develop the required leadership and organisational skills to help reach organisational goals.

In today’s chaotic and challenging business environment, a multitude of challenges confront business leaders.  Executives usually rely on the organisation’s internal human resources such as directors, senior management, employees and the like.  There is also a misconception that once an executive reaches the peak of his career, there is no further need or scope for coaching and personal development.  In reality, objective support and feedback from external sources could be even more crucial then in order to allow an executive to develop his/her potential further.  One-on-one coaching has been successful in filling in this gap as it provides focused support where it is most needed.

There are two models of coaching, namely:

Model 1

coaching starts with a detailed analysis of current work practices, perceptions and assumptions.  Depending on the client’s (coachee) needs, timelines, recommended tools and processes to be used, together with targeted goals and objectives will be set and agreed upon.  In order to achieve the required results, the suggested actions need to be implemented by the client.  The coach will then support these actions through process reviews and feedback.

Model 2

coaching can take the form of unstructured guided learning whereby a coach is contracted by a client to challenge the current business practices adopted by the coachee and to provide new learning opportunities and insight.  Due to the uniqueness of customer requirements, the format of coaching sessions under this mode are flexible and aligned with the client’s needs, to meet the required objectives.  There are no fixed agendas or predetermined solutions in this approach to learning. Instead there is a constant dialogue revolving around what the coachee is doing and how and why s/he is doing it while it is being done.

When properly aligned with business objectives and carefully implemented, coaching has proved to be able to yield excellent returns on investment.  One-on-one coaching has gained popularity over the past years because this could be highly-customised to the coachee’s needs.  The help of an executive coach will enable executives to achieve their goals quicker and more effectively.
